Childbirth Connection sponsors two awards that were established to pay tribute to two extraordinary leaders of the organization, Carola Warburg Rothschild and Hazel Corbin, and a new award that recognizes successful initiatives to improve maternity care quality.


Maternity Quality Matters Award

The Maternity Quality Matters award honors an entity that has achieved demonstrated significant improvement in the care provided to childbearing women and newborns. Childbirth Connection presented the inaugural Maternity Quality Matters Award to the Seton Family of Hospital's in April 2008 at Childbirth Connection's 90th anniversary policy symposium, Transforming Maternity Care: A High Value Proposition.

Carola Warburg Rothschild Award
carola warburg rothschild Carola Warburg Rothschild began her association with Maternity Center Association, now known as Childbirth Connection, during World War II as a lab technician at the Berwind Clinic, a home-birth clinic run by the organization in New York City. She served as Maternity Center Association President from 1951 to 1964, and was a volunteer leader of the organization for more than forty years.  She was committed to improving maternal and child health and to empowering women to become actively involved in childbirth.  This award recognizes individuals who -- like Carola Warburg Rothschild -- have made outstanding contributions to the health and well-being of women and families.

Hazel Corbin/Childbirth Connection Grant

Hazel Corbin was appointed General Director of Maternity Center Association, now known as Childbirth Connection, in 1923 after serving on the staff since 1918, the year Maternity Center Association was founded. She served in that capacity for 42 years until her retirement in 1965.   Hazel Corbin was a nursing leader influential in significant maternal and child health policy education and practice initiatives across the country. The Hazel Corbin Grant was originally established in 1965 as a scholarship for nurse-midwifery students.  In 2005, it was renamed The Hazel Corbin/Childbirth Connection Grant for Evidence-Based Midwifery Care, to reflect our current focus on safe and effective care for mothers and babies.
